Join the University of Aberdeen for an immersive Archaeology Field Excavation Summer School. Set in a significant early medieval landscape crucial to understanding the Picts, this program offers participants the chance to excavate archaeological features such as fort post-holes, house floors, and walls. No prior experience is required, making this an ideal opportunity for beginners and those looking to expand their archaeological skills. Participants will gain practical experience in excavation, geophysical and drone survey techniques, and post-excavation analysis, all under the guidance of expert archaeologists.

Program Features

  • Participants will engage in a variety of archaeological tasks, including excavation, geophysical survey, and drone-based photogrammetry
  • hands-on training in stratigraphic analysis, recording methods, and artefact cataloguing
  • three days of lectures introducing modern field excavation methodologies
  • experience in post-excavation processes such as soil flotation and report writing
  • opportunity to work on a site linked to ongoing research into the origins and legacy of the Picts.
